I have lately been getting messages from emails such as eskelinenftbirth@gmail.com and myraky.reprints@gmail.com that have no word content. The emails just say things like aqWnvEm, AgRyxE  and vbIhqDoiIwrOxzTncS. Then, I figured it out! I just had to read the capitals and it described to me what these people really are!

Well, they keep doing it. Decided to list the emails they are using…

Russia Is Moving More Combat Forces Along the Ukrainian Border

europe g1d91c5971 1920

Not really sure what to think about this situation. I have a peer that is from Ukrainica, now in America, and I am sure he would not agree with this situation. I have heard that Putin thinks of the Ukrainians as brothers and not sure if he is phishing for economic change through the use of his propaganda machine or actually trying to conquer the liberated country? Instead of trapping the United States however, Mr. Putin may have trapped himself. Caught between armed conflict or a humiliating retreat, may cause him humiliation. He could invade and risk defeat, or he could pull back and have nothing to show for his brinkmanship. What happens next is unknown. But one thing is clear: Mr. Putin’s gamble may have failed. IT Skill Crisis

bulletin board

From: https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-it-skills-gap-is-getting-worse-here-are-10-ways-you-can-avoid-a-crisis/

The IT skills gap is getting worse. Here are 10 ways you can avoid a crisis

The IT skills crisis is worse than ever before and CIOs must create effective recruitment and retention strategies if they want to snare the talent that their digital transformation projects desperately require.

That’s the main finding from recruiter Harvey Nash Group’s Digital Leadership Reportwhich shows that more than two-thirds (67%) of digital leaders globally are now unable to keep pace with change because of a dearth of technology talent.

SPECIAL REPORT

Digital Transformation: A CXO’s Guide

Reimagining business for the digital age is the number one priority of many of today’s top executives. ZDNet offers practical advice and examples of how to get your digital transformation right.

Bev White, chief executive of Harvey Nash Group, says her conversations with CIOs suggest that companies with IT skills gaps are going to find it much harder to hit their digital transformation targets.

SEE: Tech skills: Four ways you can get the right mix

“They won’t be able to achieve what they’re needing to do,” she says. “And that would be a terrible outcome because we’re seeing some fantastic transformational work being undertaken by digital leaders today.”

White says the continued push for digitization – with 60% of companies intending to increase technology investments during the next 12 months – means talented tech workers are going to be highly prized.

While the demand for continued tech investment is good news for CIOs, it also creates huge pressures, particularly when it comes to resourcing. New projects need talented staff – and they’re becoming increasingly hard to attract and retain.

“It’s really competitive and people are throwing the kitchen sink at people to get them to leave their current roles and join their businesses,” says White. “So not only are you trying to attract new talent in, but you’re trying to keep the back door shut, so that people don’t go off and leave you. For CIOs, the skills crisis is now a massive challenge.”

It’s a trend that’s recognized in the boardroom, too. Gartner says recruitment and retention is a top strategic priority for 52% of boards of directors for 2022, representing an 86% increase in interest over 2021. The analyst says the skills crisis is becoming a much more critical issue for boards as companies accelerate their digital transformation efforts.

Harvey Nash’s research suggests that while 61% of organizations globally are planning to increase their IT headcounts to record levels during the next 12 months, four in 10 digital leaders say they can’t keep people as long as they would like to because they’re being lured away by the offer of more money somewhere else.

In terms of capability gaps, cybersecurity (43%) is the most sought-after tech skill, up by almost a quarter in the past 12 months, followed by big data/analysts (40%), and technical architects (34%). The shortage of developers (32%), meanwhile, is increasing at a faster rate than other tech roles.

White says CIOs who want to keep innovating on behalf of their businesses must wake up to the growing skills crisis. She suggests 10 tactics for digital leaders who are looking to recruit and retain hard-to-find talent:

  1. Increase internal capabilities – White says industry estimates suggest about 10% of tech skills become redundant every year. As those older skills fall away, CIOs must focus on developing newer skills among their people. That’s important because people will stay with you if they feel they have a meaningful role that’s developing into a long-term career.
  2. Cross-train your staff – Give staff the opportunity to develop new skills as they work. Train people inside and out of technology teams in fresh digital and data skills, such as analytics and popular programming languages. More than half (51%) of digital leaders are planning to cross-train people in other parts of their organization during the next year.
  3. Offer more flexibility – Make sure your people know that you really want to keep them. “Remember to say ‘thank you’; show them that they’re valuable,” says White, who believes demonstrating value isn’t just about paying people more money, it’s also about giving people the flexibility to work how they want to.
  4. Fill gaps quickly – White says we’re now in an IT labor market where sought-after skilled people have a lot of say over the direction of their careers. Grab talented people while you can. “If you’re interviewing someone, make a decision and move fast because they’ll be gone in a heartbeat,” she says.
  5. Don’t search for perfection – Candidates who are missing one or two skills can be trained on the job. But while you should prepare to upskill, you should also make sure you pay attention to the cultural fit. If the individual isn’t the type of person who’s going to adopt to your style of working, then it’s unlikely training will help.
  6. Cast your net wider – White says labor markets have widened. Companies that used to recruit across a 20-mile radius are now hiring skilled candidates from around the globe due to cloud and collaboration technologies. More than a third of digital leaders have widened their geographical net to source new talent.
  7. Attract younger talent – Work with schools, colleges and universities to encourage more young people to take STEM subjects as part of their education. White says CIOs must find fresh ways to show young people that a career in IT can be both exciting and rewarding.
  8. Broaden your reach – Be willing to take people without experience and teach them how to be technologists. Just over a third (39%) of digital leaders say they will be offering more apprenticeships over the coming year. Those apprenticeships shouldn’t just be for young people, either – look for anyone who has the mindset to learn and develop.
  9. Create a consistent offer – There’s lots of job openings, so talented IT professionals will be looking for roles that show career development opportunities. Create a strong message to attract people and keep it consistent once they’ve joined. If the on-the-job experience doesn’t match the original offer, then new people will leave quickly.
  10. Consider alternative sources – Wage inflation around permanent roles means your organization should also look to contractors and freelancers as a way to fill capability gaps. Your organization gets the skills it needs; contractors get the flexibility they desire.

What’s clear from Harvey Nash’s research of more than 2,100 digital leaders around the globe, which was completed in collaboration with CIONET and contributed to by Massachusetts Institute of Technology CISR, is that recruitment and retention strategies are a continual work in progress.

Organizations that work to hone their strategies now are likely to have an advantage when it comes to hiring and keeping talent. So far, only a third of companies (32%) have redesigned their employee offer to make it attractive to staff in the new hybrid-working world. The task for digital leaders now is to find a strategy that works – and quickly.

“There isn’t a silver bullet for this,” says White. “It’s about doing a mix of things that are really important. CIOs are talking about their recruitment and retention tactics all the time now. They know that doing nothing is not an answer. They know they can’t afford to slow down digitization efforts because of a skills gap. They’ve got to keep going.”

PSA: Widespread Remote Working Scam Underway

This entry was posted in General SecurityPSA on October 28, 2021 by Mark Maunder   3 Replies

I’ve just gotten off the phone with a victim of the scam that I’m about to describe. This is impacting a lot of folks, so please do spread the word. It’s infuriating. I’ll be around to reply to your comments below, but please do not engage in victim-blaming, because until you’ve actually been hit by one of these scams, you don’t know how convincing attackers can be.

As you already know, Defiant is a 100% remote company. We have been remote since 2015 when we first started hiring. Thanks to COVID, a lot of brick-and-mortar companies are now hiring for remote positions. There is a remote hiring scam that has rapidly gained popularity and works as follows:

The Attack

An attacker will post a job ad on a job board for a position. We have seen “Data Capturing” as one of the roles, but the roles vary. An interview is conducted. In the cases we’ve seen, it has been done via Skype direct message and there were two attackers who had a conversation with the victim. The first attacker posed as a kind of coordinator and went by “Jennifer Udin”. The second posed as a manager named “Antonio Wheeler”.

The victim gets the job. The “employer” (attacker) congratulates them and says that they will provide all required furniture and office supplies. The attacker then sends the victim a check which they are told to cash, and they’re asked to immediately buy furniture from the attacker’s preferred supplier. In the case we investigated, the amount paid was several thousand US dollars.

The victim’s bank will put a hold on cashing the check until it passes fraud checks. The victim spends the money out of pocket, on the furniture, in a non-refundable way. The victim is out of pocket thousands of dollars. And the “furniture company” is actually the attacker who now has the money.

There are several variations of this attack. The goal is to either get personally identifiable information (PII) from a victim or to get money. In all cases, the scam is based around an employment opportunity and a legitimate company is used as a vehicle for the attacker to scam the victim.

How To Avoid This Scam

We recommend you take the following steps to avoid this scam:

  • Go to the employer website and confirm that the job you’re applying for is actually an open position on their site.
  • Contact the hiring company using the published contact information on their website – either an email address or phone number – and verify that the role exists and that you are in the hiring queue.
  • As far as possible, do not apply on job boards. Instead, apply by navigating to the hiring company’s website and proceed from there. You may be directed to external HR sites like Workable.com, but you will be following links from the hiring company’s own website.
  • Never spend money out of pocket for a job application or for a new job you have just started. You may need to spend money out of pocket in the future because reimbursement has become standard practice among many companies, but this should be unacceptable for a position you have just started.
  • I have not encountered a company that only does interviews via direct message. COVID has changed the way we do business, so it is understandable that victims are assuming that direct-message interviews are part of that change.

Please share this information as widely as you can. This has had a significant financial impact on folks I have talked to, and their stories are heartbreaking. If you have been affected by this, please visit IC3.gov and report the crime.

Data We Have Gathered

The following screenshots and data were kindly provided to us by several victims of this scam. We have redacted sensitive information.

An introductory chat session:

An authoritative-sounding Jennifer gives instructions on visiting the “hiring company’s” website which is a real website. They add a time limit to add legitimacy.

Once the victim has been hired, they’re referred to a “training supervisor”.

This is the profile of one of the scammers. Probably a stock photo and plausible-sounding name.

How I deal with upset customers?

smiley gafa76a183 1920

I try to leave emotions out of it. Get all the facts, and even if they’re facts, have ALL parties agree those are the facts (if not, provide proof until the other side accepts it as fact).

If no proof is available, continue to have all sides communicate it from their point of view in a calm way.
Let all sides, listen to the other side and take it all in.

Now put all the facts and views together, and find a solution. It’s not a blame game, it’s a solutions game where all parties involved agree on the solution. Sometimes it involves conceding on a few points, just as much as the other side may have to. Keep it fair and reasonable, but try to keep the “customer is always right” in mind. You may lose a bit for this, even if you’re fully in your rights. The losing part may be a loss to you, but if the customer becomes from upset to happy, it may very well be a RETURNING customer, making up for the loss in the long run.

Obviously, if they keep being upset AND unreasonable in the long run, cut your losses, and do not continue doing business with them.

I learned long ago to also ask the client what they would like as a resolution to their complaint.  Many times I learned that they had no answer; they just wanted to complain!  Find out what they want and see if it is reasonable.

Role of AI Writing for Future Blog Content

a gf675c1a28 1280

I went to an AI content writing application and got the following:

AI writers can help content writers by generating content ideas at a large scale.

The best use cases for AI writing assistants will be in the form of blog posts, research papers, and case studies. Blog posts are usually written about a niche topic and the AI writer can generate ideas for blog posts from a particular niche or topic. Research papers and case studies are often used to display findings from a study or experiment. The AI writer will be able to create these for you with ease.

One of the best examples of AI’s importance in the future of copywriting is content generation. Marketers and agencies these days are looking for easy and cost-effective ways to automate copywriting tasks.

This is why we need to consider content marketing automation tools, such as chatbots and AI writers, which can generate blog content at scale and keep our blogs updated with fresh and high-quality content on a regular basis.

AI writing is best used for generating blog content. There are many benefits to using AI writing as a tool for blogs:

1. The machine will generate content much faster than a human writer and with much greater accuracy and variety

2. You can use AI to create blog content that is not only written but also well-researched and provides insights

3. The machine can generate blog content on any topic of your choice, giving you the chance of having an expert writer on your team without you needing to spend time finding one

Blogging is a way for businesses to connect with their customers and generate quality content that can be used for SEO to attract more traffic.

In the future, AI writer will play a big part in content creation. It will eliminate writer’s block and provide great blog topics at scale.

This is me talking now, wow! The only thing about the content is that Yoast identifies it as “Needs Improvement”.

Old Hacked Passwords on the Web

GitLab, which I have not utilized extensively as yet, sent me a new login to my account. It was supposedly from the Philippines (see image below), but I think it is just Hack Assers just trying an old password that has been identified and put onto the web for all jerks to use. I completely forgot about this account and have since changed the old password and set up secondary authentication for the account. Get so tired of assholes and need to work on an area to collect all these IPs that are used to HACK accounts! Make sure you change old passwords everyone!

I also have IPs attacking me from what is identified as Microsoft. I believe in Washington they must have hosting provided from Microsoft because the location (see below) is certainly not a Microsoft location.

WordPress Plugins

striving blogger zjx z2q5zrk unsplash

We’re going to talk about researching a profitable plugin idea. So don’t worry about anything else except for getting an idea of what’s out there, and different ideas that you can potentially create. Now obviously, if you already have a plugin in mind, you probably could skip this, but it’s a good to read just in case you decide to have another idea in the future. So let’s do some quick research to show you what plugins are in demand by looking at what we call consumer demand. And that’s really what drives whether or not your plugin is going to be profitable or not, whether or not there is a need out there. So there are two ways of doing this, because there are many plugins out there already. You can look at them and look what’s wrong with them and see what people are saying and improve on that. Which is actually the easiest way to go about doing this and can be very profitable. Or you can develop your brand new idea plugin doesn’t exist or anything like that. But with that, it’s a little bit more time to try to figure out consumer demand. But there are ways of going about doing that. So consumer demand is really, really important here. So I really want to drive that home. All great WordPress plugins are born out of problems that people are facing. So if this is a problem that you’re facing, that’s great, then you can associate with that you know exactly how that feels. If this is a problem that you do not face, but you can research it, and figure out how people are feeling about it, what people are doing about it to solve that issue. And how your WordPress plugin can speed the process up, then that’s a good thing as well. But you really want to get into the brain of the consumer. So let me go ahead and show you how to find consumer demand through the use of free keyword tools, and how to start with Google and research from that point on.

Now, before I jump in and start talking about consumer demand or anything like that, I wanted to talk briefly about what you should be looking for as you’re looking for the consumer demand. Now obviously, when it comes to any type of software or WordPress plug in, what you’re trying to look for is you’re trying to find some sort of tedious process that takes time. And it’s very manual process. So what I mean by that is something that somebody actually does either on their computer, or wherever else, and it’s just taking a lot of time, and you have to speed that process up. And they’re willing to pay for the ability to speed that process up. Alright, so if you look at most WordPress plugins, they basically speed a process up, or they help you in some sort of way. They basically take some process that could take anywhere from a couple hours to a couple of days or even a couple weeks. And it speeds the whole process up thereby saving you time. That’s one of the reasons why most people buy pieces of software because it automates the process. So as you’re looking through for consumer demand, or as you’re looking for plugins, you want to find something that is sort of a pain point, meaning it’s really frustrating because you have to take all this time to actually do it. Alright, so if we head back over to Google here, and if we think about it for just a second, if we think that software is often are born from frustrations, so you can go to Google and type something like top frustrations and let Google complete it for you such as top frustrations and life top frustrations at work top frustrations in gaming so you could think about something you enjoy yourself or something that you have done that takes time on the computer and you want to speed the process up alright, but usually this process with a WordPress plugin needs to be something that is on your website. So top frustrations related to maybe your website and then go from there and try to figure out what these top frustrations are. So if you just take some time to just go through the articles so let’s open up these here. And you may or may not find the WordPress plug in that you’re looking for, but you’re kind of getting a an idea of what is happening on the website itself. So we can See like playing messenger lacking communication, changes, continuous edits. So maybe you could develop a WordPress plugin around that wavering deadlines time management, you can develop a WordPress time management plugin, you can go through here, we can go to a different article here. So this is core up and we see this guy says providing high quality for us content, maybe you could develop a plugin that pulls in YouTube videos or content curation to make it so it’s easy for people to develop content, or maybe you can develop something that allows them to create fresh articles really, really fast without plagiarizing, of course. And then we go down. And let’s look at a different article.

What are your top three frustrations with your website, too much content that overwhelm the reader, user design and user experience directing the user to the right content and workflow. So going through here, what you’re looking for is a pattern if you can see several people saying I have problems because just finding fresh content is just a big roadblock in my life. If you see tons and tons and tons of people saying that, the next thing you want to do is you want to head on over to wordpress.org slash plugins over here. And then you want to type that in so we could type in something like time management, and see what we get. So as we can see a good amount of plugins. And we can see, if we can see more plugins, that means there is definitely a demand. Now if you see a lot of plugins, but there’s no feedback or ratings or anything like that, that might not be a good sign. But another thing you can do is you can see, a lot of times you’ll have like a really good plugin, but nobody leaves any reviews, right? So we got four and a half stars out of 522 reviews. But if you look down on the bottom left hand corner of these boxes, you can see that 40,000 people installed it. Alright, so that definitely shows there is a demand for that plugin. So if we look over here, easy appointments 3000 installs 100,000 installs for events manager. So we can see the demand by looking at wordpress.org/plugins, but jetpack here is obviously created by WordPress. So obviously, they have 3 million active installs. So that means that 3 million people installed it on their WordPress site. So what you want to do is you want to go through here and find a WordPress plug in that really stands out to you.

So let’s say we want to click on one. And you want to get an idea of what it does. And then you want to take a look at the one star ratings. Why one star ratings because you want to find people’s frustrations, you want to see if you can find a pattern. Now if this WordPress plugin is really good. And you’re asking how can I compete with these guys? Well, you can look at the one star ratings and see where this plugin falls short. If constantly people are saying this fall short because of this, this, this and this, you can go out and create a WordPress plugin based on that particular shortcoming. And then you come out with it. And you know that it’s going to sell because you have so many people that are frustrated. Now, obviously you need to make sure that people are willing to buy for that, and we’ll talk more about that later. But that’s just a simple process that you can take by going to Google typing in top frustrations website, or things I hate about my website or, or something related to WordPress, and then find those and dig deep into those pain points. You can do the same thing with YouTube, you can do the same thing with Facebook, use the search bar at the top and fine frustrations that people have. So that’s a good way to kind of figure out consumer demand in the terms of figuring out how many people are frustrated with this specific problem. And that’s really what we’re I am to drive home.

Japan breaks internet speed record with a 319Tbps data transfer

The many-gigabit internet speed records of a decade ago now seem downright inadequate. Motherboard reports that scientists at Japan’s National institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) have smashed the internet transfer record by shuffling data at 319Tbps. For context, that’s almost twice as fast as the 179Tbps a team of British and Japanese researchers managed in August 2020.

NICT managed the feat by upgrading virtually every stage of the pipeline. The fiber optic line had four cores instead of one, and researchers fired a 552-channel comb laser at multiple wavelengths with the assistance of rare earth amplifiers. While the test was strictly confined to the lab, the team used coiled fiber to transfer data at a simulated 1,864-mile distance without losing signal quality or speed.

As with many of these experiments, it could be a long time before this performance has a meaningful impact. While the four-core fiber would work with existing networks, the system could easily be very expensive. It’s more likely to see initial use with internet backbones and other major networking projects where capacity matters more than cost.

That could still impact your internet usage, though. The NICT researchers envision their next-gen fiber making technologies “beyond 5G” (like 6G) more practical. You may see the benefits simply by moving to faster internet access that doesn’t choke when there’s a surge of users.

Alphabets latest moonshot aims to make industrial robots more practical

Alphabet has launched another company in its X moonshot factory, and this one may be its most ambitious robotics project to date. The just-opened firm, Intrinsic, plans to make industrial robots more accessible to people and businesses that couldn’t otherwise justify the effort involved to teach the machines. You could see robotic manufacturing in more countries, for example, or small businesses that can automate production that previously required manual labor.

Intrinsic will focus on software tools that make these robots easier to use, more flexible and more affordable. To that end, the company has been testing a mix of software tools that include AI techniques like automated perception, motion planning and reinforcement learning. Company chief Wendy Tan-White has relevant experience, too. She started the “world’s first” software-as-a-service site builder to make web development more accessible, launched early online banking and lending services, and helped nurture startups as a VP at X.

The technology is still early, but there are already promising results. During its development time at X, the team trained a robot to make a USB connection in two hours (instead of programming it over hundreds of hours) and had robotic arms build simple furniture (shown below). Automation wouldn’t be “realistic or affordable” for efforts like these using existing technology, Intrinsic said.

The new company still has much work to do. It’s now focused more on creating a practical product and “validating” its tech. It’s also hunting for partners in car manufacturing, electronics and healthcare that currently use industrial robots. If Intrinsic succeeds, though, it could make robotics more equitable and fill gaps in production. The company even suggests that its work could help the environment — the closer robotic factories are to people, the lower the emissions needed to transport goods to customers.

This might prove challenging. Rethink Robotics spent years developing collaborative robots that learn through simple human guidance, only to shut down as sales fell short. X moonshot companies also aren’t guaranteed to succeed — look at Loon’s fate as an example. Alphabet’s money could help where companies like Rethink struggled, however, and Intrinsic is focused more on solving overall robotics problems rather than specific scenarios. This effort might stand a better chance than most.
