Why College Degrees Are Working Against Many Job-Seekers

graduation gc1f93f522 1920

The following article from FEE Stories has been known by me for years. The only difference I see, that others may not, is that college is a great place to learn how to learn and that older workers did not have the ability to learn online…

From: FEE Stories

“Would you rather hire someone who ran a marathon, or had a college degree?’

I remember when I saw the question posed on LinkedIn. It got hundreds of responses, almost all of whom said they’d pick the marathoner.

It turns out, the story most young people have been told about the value of degrees on the job market isn’t true, and it’s getting less true every day.

A few years ago, I talked to a business owner who turned down a candidate I passed along because he had a Master’s degree. He told me, “He seems smart and has some skill, but he’s been in school too long. It will take me too much time to get those habits out of him. Plus, I’ve found people with advanced degrees tend to be entitled and assume they’re worth more than they are.”

The famous venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz developed a framework for evaluating which entrepreneurs were most likely to succeed with their startups. One of the strongest indicators was being a college drop-out. The courage and out-of-the-box thinking needed to overcome social pressure and quit school was a bullish sign.

All of these stories share one takeaway in common: a college degree doesn’t do a good job of signaling employability. In fact, choosing not to get one can be a better signal.

And no wonder. Employers routinely report that college grads lack basic skills they look for in new hires. (See here, here, and here, for example). In fact, less than 10 percent of employers think colleges do a good job of preparing students for the working world. (Study cited here.)

A lack of useful skills is only part of the problem. Grads are saddled with debt, often taught absurd ideas from professors disconnected from the real world, and encouraged to see themselves as victims. Add to that binge-drinking and increasingly draconian policies around health and politically correct speech, and campuses have become a place to pick up bad habits and bad ideas.

Employers want to know you can create value. ‘BA – Communications’ on a resume doesn’t convey much. But you know what does?

A good opt-out or drop-out story.

I have seen hundreds of young people with no degree and no experience get jobs that said a bachelor’s and 2-3 years of experience were required. They won these jobs because they showed something more valuable than a few static bullets on a resume. They explained why they chose not to go to college, and that they did an apprenticeship, internship, self-guided study program, or project instead.

Employers love it. They get excited. Instead of someone simply taking the path of least resistance and muddling through college because their parents paid for it, they see individuals willing to forge their own way, think clearly about costs and benefits, and take initiative.

That’s why college alternative programs often boast placement rates of 90 percent or better immediately upon graduation, while just 40 percent of university students have jobs within three months after graduation.

Young people who prioritize real-world experience, self-directed learning, and creating an interesting life for themselves are increasingly sought after over those who do the normal college thing.

What began as a counter-signal for startup founders and high-tech jobs is spreading to more and more roles as hiring managers discover the best traits are better correlated with opt-outs than the college-educated. The most dynamic companies need to see more than the same piece of paper everyone else has.

It’s not that college is too good for many young people; it’s that more and more young people are too good for college.”

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Everyone

saint patrick's day

Just me, Curt Long, saying Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all.

From: https://theculturetrip.com/?s=saint+patrick%27s+day (check out places to stay in Ireland here).

Dublin’s massive St Patrick’s Day parade draws more than half a million people onto the city’s main streets to watch the procession of colorful floats and troupes of performers. For unobstructed views, you can book a seat in a tiered grandstand along the route. However, while the parade is impressive and always popular with families and visitors keen to soak up the atmosphere, lots of Dublin’s residents steer well clear of the center and head to the edges of the city, where they celebrate in a more low-key fashion.”

Emily Dalmas, our staff producer, recently worked with one of the world’s top animators to create an animation short that explains our product suite.

It’s the story of Jane and her dog Rosie, and their journey from running a hobbyist blog, to running a global business in partnership with Wordfence.

As a WordPress user, I know you have an appreciation of the arts and the creative process because you are a creator. So I wanted to share our process in creating this animation short, in the hope of inspiring you! You can find Emily’s full article on the official Wordfence blog. Russia Is Moving More Combat Forces Along the Ukrainian Border

Not really sure what to think about this situation. I have a peer that is from Ukrainica, now in America, and I am sure he would not agree with this situation. I have heard that Putin thinks of the Ukrainians as brothers and not sure if he is phishing for economic change through the use of his propaganda machine or actually trying to conquer the liberated country? Instead of trapping the United States however, Mr. Putin may have trapped himself. Caught between armed conflict or a humiliating retreat, may cause him humiliation. He could invade and risk defeat, or he could pull back and have nothing to show for his brinkmanship. What happens next is unknown. But one thing is clear: Mr. Putin’s gamble may have failed. IT Skill Crisis

bulletin board

From: https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-it-skills-gap-is-getting-worse-here-are-10-ways-you-can-avoid-a-crisis/

The IT skills gap is getting worse. Here are 10 ways you can avoid a crisis

The IT skills crisis is worse than ever before and CIOs must create effective recruitment and retention strategies if they want to snare the talent that their digital transformation projects desperately require.

That’s the main finding from recruiter Harvey Nash Group’s Digital Leadership Reportwhich shows that more than two-thirds (67%) of digital leaders globally are now unable to keep pace with change because of a dearth of technology talent.

SPECIAL REPORT

Digital Transformation: A CXO’s Guide

Reimagining business for the digital age is the number one priority of many of today’s top executives. ZDNet offers practical advice and examples of how to get your digital transformation right.

Bev White, chief executive of Harvey Nash Group, says her conversations with CIOs suggest that companies with IT skills gaps are going to find it much harder to hit their digital transformation targets.

SEE: Tech skills: Four ways you can get the right mix

“They won’t be able to achieve what they’re needing to do,” she says. “And that would be a terrible outcome because we’re seeing some fantastic transformational work being undertaken by digital leaders today.”

White says the continued push for digitization – with 60% of companies intending to increase technology investments during the next 12 months – means talented tech workers are going to be highly prized.

While the demand for continued tech investment is good news for CIOs, it also creates huge pressures, particularly when it comes to resourcing. New projects need talented staff – and they’re becoming increasingly hard to attract and retain.

“It’s really competitive and people are throwing the kitchen sink at people to get them to leave their current roles and join their businesses,” says White. “So not only are you trying to attract new talent in, but you’re trying to keep the back door shut, so that people don’t go off and leave you. For CIOs, the skills crisis is now a massive challenge.”

It’s a trend that’s recognized in the boardroom, too. Gartner says recruitment and retention is a top strategic priority for 52% of boards of directors for 2022, representing an 86% increase in interest over 2021. The analyst says the skills crisis is becoming a much more critical issue for boards as companies accelerate their digital transformation efforts.

Harvey Nash’s research suggests that while 61% of organizations globally are planning to increase their IT headcounts to record levels during the next 12 months, four in 10 digital leaders say they can’t keep people as long as they would like to because they’re being lured away by the offer of more money somewhere else.

In terms of capability gaps, cybersecurity (43%) is the most sought-after tech skill, up by almost a quarter in the past 12 months, followed by big data/analysts (40%), and technical architects (34%). The shortage of developers (32%), meanwhile, is increasing at a faster rate than other tech roles.

White says CIOs who want to keep innovating on behalf of their businesses must wake up to the growing skills crisis. She suggests 10 tactics for digital leaders who are looking to recruit and retain hard-to-find talent:

  1. Increase internal capabilities – White says industry estimates suggest about 10% of tech skills become redundant every year. As those older skills fall away, CIOs must focus on developing newer skills among their people. That’s important because people will stay with you if they feel they have a meaningful role that’s developing into a long-term career.
  2. Cross-train your staff – Give staff the opportunity to develop new skills as they work. Train people inside and out of technology teams in fresh digital and data skills, such as analytics and popular programming languages. More than half (51%) of digital leaders are planning to cross-train people in other parts of their organization during the next year.
  3. Offer more flexibility – Make sure your people know that you really want to keep them. “Remember to say ‘thank you’; show them that they’re valuable,” says White, who believes demonstrating value isn’t just about paying people more money, it’s also about giving people the flexibility to work how they want to.
  4. Fill gaps quickly – White says we’re now in an IT labor market where sought-after skilled people have a lot of say over the direction of their careers. Grab talented people while you can. “If you’re interviewing someone, make a decision and move fast because they’ll be gone in a heartbeat,” she says.
  5. Don’t search for perfection – Candidates who are missing one or two skills can be trained on the job. But while you should prepare to upskill, you should also make sure you pay attention to the cultural fit. If the individual isn’t the type of person who’s going to adopt to your style of working, then it’s unlikely training will help.
  6. Cast your net wider – White says labor markets have widened. Companies that used to recruit across a 20-mile radius are now hiring skilled candidates from around the globe due to cloud and collaboration technologies. More than a third of digital leaders have widened their geographical net to source new talent.
  7. Attract younger talent – Work with schools, colleges and universities to encourage more young people to take STEM subjects as part of their education. White says CIOs must find fresh ways to show young people that a career in IT can be both exciting and rewarding.
  8. Broaden your reach – Be willing to take people without experience and teach them how to be technologists. Just over a third (39%) of digital leaders say they will be offering more apprenticeships over the coming year. Those apprenticeships shouldn’t just be for young people, either – look for anyone who has the mindset to learn and develop.
  9. Create a consistent offer – There’s lots of job openings, so talented IT professionals will be looking for roles that show career development opportunities. Create a strong message to attract people and keep it consistent once they’ve joined. If the on-the-job experience doesn’t match the original offer, then new people will leave quickly.
  10. Consider alternative sources – Wage inflation around permanent roles means your organization should also look to contractors and freelancers as a way to fill capability gaps. Your organization gets the skills it needs; contractors get the flexibility they desire.

What’s clear from Harvey Nash’s research of more than 2,100 digital leaders around the globe, which was completed in collaboration with CIONET and contributed to by Massachusetts Institute of Technology CISR, is that recruitment and retention strategies are a continual work in progress.

Organizations that work to hone their strategies now are likely to have an advantage when it comes to hiring and keeping talent. So far, only a third of companies (32%) have redesigned their employee offer to make it attractive to staff in the new hybrid-working world. The task for digital leaders now is to find a strategy that works – and quickly.

“There isn’t a silver bullet for this,” says White. “It’s about doing a mix of things that are really important. CIOs are talking about their recruitment and retention tactics all the time now. They know that doing nothing is not an answer. They know they can’t afford to slow down digitization efforts because of a skills gap. They’ve got to keep going.”

PSA: Widespread Remote Working Scam Underway

This entry was posted in General SecurityPSA on October 28, 2021 by Mark Maunder   3 Replies

I’ve just gotten off the phone with a victim of the scam that I’m about to describe. This is impacting a lot of folks, so please do spread the word. It’s infuriating. I’ll be around to reply to your comments below, but please do not engage in victim-blaming, because until you’ve actually been hit by one of these scams, you don’t know how convincing attackers can be.

As you already know, Defiant is a 100% remote company. We have been remote since 2015 when we first started hiring. Thanks to COVID, a lot of brick-and-mortar companies are now hiring for remote positions. There is a remote hiring scam that has rapidly gained popularity and works as follows:

The Attack

An attacker will post a job ad on a job board for a position. We have seen “Data Capturing” as one of the roles, but the roles vary. An interview is conducted. In the cases we’ve seen, it has been done via Skype direct message and there were two attackers who had a conversation with the victim. The first attacker posed as a kind of coordinator and went by “Jennifer Udin”. The second posed as a manager named “Antonio Wheeler”.

The victim gets the job. The “employer” (attacker) congratulates them and says that they will provide all required furniture and office supplies. The attacker then sends the victim a check which they are told to cash, and they’re asked to immediately buy furniture from the attacker’s preferred supplier. In the case we investigated, the amount paid was several thousand US dollars.

The victim’s bank will put a hold on cashing the check until it passes fraud checks. The victim spends the money out of pocket, on the furniture, in a non-refundable way. The victim is out of pocket thousands of dollars. And the “furniture company” is actually the attacker who now has the money.

There are several variations of this attack. The goal is to either get personally identifiable information (PII) from a victim or to get money. In all cases, the scam is based around an employment opportunity and a legitimate company is used as a vehicle for the attacker to scam the victim.

How To Avoid This Scam

We recommend you take the following steps to avoid this scam:

  • Go to the employer website and confirm that the job you’re applying for is actually an open position on their site.
  • Contact the hiring company using the published contact information on their website – either an email address or phone number – and verify that the role exists and that you are in the hiring queue.
  • As far as possible, do not apply on job boards. Instead, apply by navigating to the hiring company’s website and proceed from there. You may be directed to external HR sites like Workable.com, but you will be following links from the hiring company’s own website.
  • Never spend money out of pocket for a job application or for a new job you have just started. You may need to spend money out of pocket in the future because reimbursement has become standard practice among many companies, but this should be unacceptable for a position you have just started.
  • I have not encountered a company that only does interviews via direct message. COVID has changed the way we do business, so it is understandable that victims are assuming that direct-message interviews are part of that change.

Please share this information as widely as you can. This has had a significant financial impact on folks I have talked to, and their stories are heartbreaking. If you have been affected by this, please visit IC3.gov and report the crime.

Data We Have Gathered

The following screenshots and data were kindly provided to us by several victims of this scam. We have redacted sensitive information.

An introductory chat session:

An authoritative-sounding Jennifer gives instructions on visiting the “hiring company’s” website which is a real website. They add a time limit to add legitimacy.

Once the victim has been hired, they’re referred to a “training supervisor”.

This is the profile of one of the scammers. Probably a stock photo and plausible-sounding name.

How I deal with upset customers?

smiley gafa76a183 1920

I try to leave emotions out of it. Get all the facts, and even if they’re facts, have ALL parties agree those are the facts (if not, provide proof until the other side accepts it as fact).

If no proof is available, continue to have all sides communicate it from their point of view in a calm way.
Let all sides, listen to the other side and take it all in.

Now put all the facts and views together, and find a solution. It’s not a blame game, it’s a solutions game where all parties involved agree on the solution. Sometimes it involves conceding on a few points, just as much as the other side may have to. Keep it fair and reasonable, but try to keep the “customer is always right” in mind. You may lose a bit for this, even if you’re fully in your rights. The losing part may be a loss to you, but if the customer becomes from upset to happy, it may very well be a RETURNING customer, making up for the loss in the long run.

Obviously, if they keep being upset AND unreasonable in the long run, cut your losses, and do not continue doing business with them.

I learned long ago to also ask the client what they would like as a resolution to their complaint.  Many times I learned that they had no answer; they just wanted to complain!  Find out what they want and see if it is reasonable.

Role of AI Writing for Future Blog Content

a gf675c1a28 1280

I went to an AI content writing application and got the following:

AI writers can help content writers by generating content ideas at a large scale.

The best use cases for AI writing assistants will be in the form of blog posts, research papers, and case studies. Blog posts are usually written about a niche topic and the AI writer can generate ideas for blog posts from a particular niche or topic. Research papers and case studies are often used to display findings from a study or experiment. The AI writer will be able to create these for you with ease.

One of the best examples of AI’s importance in the future of copywriting is content generation. Marketers and agencies these days are looking for easy and cost-effective ways to automate copywriting tasks.

This is why we need to consider content marketing automation tools, such as chatbots and AI writers, which can generate blog content at scale and keep our blogs updated with fresh and high-quality content on a regular basis.

AI writing is best used for generating blog content. There are many benefits to using AI writing as a tool for blogs:

1. The machine will generate content much faster than a human writer and with much greater accuracy and variety

2. You can use AI to create blog content that is not only written but also well-researched and provides insights

3. The machine can generate blog content on any topic of your choice, giving you the chance of having an expert writer on your team without you needing to spend time finding one

Blogging is a way for businesses to connect with their customers and generate quality content that can be used for SEO to attract more traffic.

In the future, AI writer will play a big part in content creation. It will eliminate writer’s block and provide great blog topics at scale.

This is me talking now, wow! The only thing about the content is that Yoast identifies it as “Needs Improvement”.
