To be honest, the Fourth of July is not the first, or even the fifth or sixth, retail holiday on our calendars. It’s a day for grilling and lighting things on fire, not buying them. And a lot of people—both customers and retailers—are saving up their big guns for Amazon Prime Day, our real national summer shopping holiday.
Nevertheless, it’s still possible to save a couple bucks, especially if you’re shopping for travel and outdoor gear for your summer vacaciones. In our opinion, the best deal of all is a year’s subscription to WIRED for $5, which still comes with a free Yubikey. But we’ve rounded up a few others for you to look at on National Fireworks Day.
OUTDOOR GEAR
-
Hydro Flask Ombre Water Bottle for $36 (was $45). All of Hydro Flask’s insulated bottles and tumblers are on sale right now, and I especially like their water bottle forkids. Their ombre ones are very eye-catching.
-
Osprey Ozone Daypack for $78 (was $130). REI is running a huge Fourth of July sale and they’re discounting a few Osprey packs, which are some of the most comfortable bags in the business.
-
Goldwin Mountain Parka for $164 (was $544). Off-season is a great time to pick up outrageously expensive winter wear, and it’s very rare to see any of Goldwin’s stylish, technical apparel on sale. All of Huckberry‘s sale section is on point right now, actually.
-
TreePod Cabana for $142 (was $190).TreePod‘s cabanas are perfect for casual backyard hangs (ha! Get it?).
-
Salewa Ultra Train 2 for $126 (was $139). It’s not a great sale, but WIRED readers loved the Salewa Ultra Train 2 when I reviewed them (spoiler: I did too).
-
Otterbox Venture 45 Cooler for $280 (was $350). Otterbox’s heavy-duty Americana coolers will all be 20 percent off starting on July 4th.
HOME GOODS
-
Nest Thermostat E and Google Home Mini for $149 (was $200). Get all the cute smart devices when you bundle Nest’s newer, cheaper thermostat with the adorable, convenient Google Home Mini.
-
iRobot Roomba 690 for $319 (was $375). In my opinion, the Roomba 690 is the best bang for your buck when itcomes to robot vacuums.
-
Dyson V7 Motorhead for $278 (was $524). Robot vacuums are amazing, but for small spaces with furniture, they’re not always the most convenient option. We loved Dyson’s light, thin, small, and convenient cordless stick vac.
-
Rosetta Stone for $57 (was $79). Rosetta Stone is by far the best online language-learning program, and their online subscriptions are on sale right now.
COMPUTER SALES
-
HP Spectre x360 for $930 (was $1190). HP is having a great Fourth of Julysale that’s worth scanning for yourself. Our pick is the Spectre x360, which, according to my colleague Chris Null, is a pretty unbeatable combination of “beautiful form and solid function”.
-
Microsoft Surface Pro for $649 (was $799). Amazon! Why are you trying to tempt us into shopping before Prime Day? This is a pretty good deal on the silent Surface Pro, but you might want to check our buying guide to make sure it’s the right pick for you.
MOBILE AND WEARABLE
-
Apple iPad for $249 (was $330). No, you probably don’t need an Apple iPad. But they’re fun to have for traveling and bringing to coffeeshops.
-
Yuneec Breeze 4K for $149 (was $220). You probably don’t need a drone, either, but also: Drone! Drone! We want a drone! This is a great price for an easy, entry-level drone.
-
Speck iPhone 8 Plus Case and Mount for $37 (was $50). Every time you update your phone, you also need to update your case and your mount. Have you?
AUDIO
-
Amazon Tap for $85 (was $130). I’m telling you now, because I’m a good person: You should probably wait for Prime Day to buy anything from Amazon. But there’s never really a bad time to pick up any of Amazon’s Alexa-enabled products.
-
Plantronics Backbeat FIT for $80 (was $110). Review is upcoming, but these are one of my favorite workout headphones.
-
V-Moda Crossfade Wireless for $199 (was $299). According to my colleague Rene Chun, these are some of the best, toughest, and greatest-sounding headphones around.
-
Jaybird Freedom Wireless for $50 (was $150). Dell’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals will be going off all month, so it’s worth checking back in as the month goes on. Of the products that go on sale today, this is a crazy deal on some of our favorite wireless headphones.
TV AND STREAMING DEVICE SALES
- Vizio 50-inch Smart 4K Television for $300 (was $450). Need a new TV to stream Independence Day, or a scathing political satire? This one’s a steal! Just remember, there’ no TV tuner if you want streaming or broadcast.
GAMING AND MOVIE SALES
-
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Blu-ray and Digital for $18 (was $40). This Fourth of July, stay inside, cool and bugbite-free, and watch the most patriotic, good-hearted Avenger take down a massive conspiracy.
-
FIFA 18 for $25 (was $60). Game Stop is having a huge Summer Days sale, with games at crazy-low prices. There are a lot of games on sale right now, but the World Cup will be going until July 15, if you want to take a break from watching soccer to playing it (inside).
